The Three Cups
Benjamin Sallowes issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Bread Street, Bread Street Ward, City of London. The depiction is of three cups with covers, part of the Salters' arms (someone who's trade involved the use of salt and working with chemicals for use in food).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 405; Obv inscription: BENIAMIN.SALLOWES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three cups with covers (in field); Rev inscription: IN.BREAD.STREET.1656 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = B.M.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Salters are: Party per chevron Azure and Gules three covered salts Argent garnished Or, the salt shedding on both sides of the salts Argent (J.
