The Black Talbot
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at a meal shop (selling meal crops, such as oats) in Bow Lane, Cheapside. The sign is of a Black Talbot, a now extinct hunting dog.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 388; Obv inscription: AT.THE.BLACK.TALBVT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A dog with collar and chain (in field); Rev inscription: BOWE.LANE.MELE.SHOP (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A dog with collar and chain (in field).
