The Tallow Chandler
John Dix, a tallow chandler (candle maker), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Bow Lane, Cheapside.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 378; Obv inscription: IOHN.DIX.TALLOW (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A man dipping candles (in field); Rev inscription: CHANDLER.IN.BOW.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / I.E.D. (four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
