Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval-Tudor; late 15th-early 16th century
Christ
Pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This thin, circular copper alloy badge is stamped with the scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On either side of the cross is a ship. Around the edge of badge is a floral border. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines. This type of thin copper alloy badge could be sewn onto a pilgrim’s clothes or into the pages of a prayer book.
