The Sunflower and Barrel
Henry Quelch, an oil man (a person who sells oil), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Bishopsgate without, Bishopsgate Ward, City of London. The depiction of a sunflower is suggestive of the oil he would have sold.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 318; Obv inscription: HEN. QVELCH. OYLEMAN. AT. YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A sunflower and barrel (in field); Rev inscription: WITHOVT.BISHOPGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENEY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
