The Mitre Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Mitre tavern in Bishopsgate Street (now Bishopsgate), Bishopsgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 249; Obv inscription: AT.THE.MITER.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mitre (in field); Rev inscription: IN.BISHOP.GATE.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.M.R. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer of the token, Richard Robinson is known from an example in the British Museum collection. He was an apprentice vintner in 1624, and and bound apprentices in 1640-1649 (Webb 1996-, xliii. 144, 361).
