The Lion
John Hearne issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for the Lion tavern in Bishopsgate Street (now Bishopsgate), Bishopsgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 235; Obv inscription: IOHN.HEARNE.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant (in field, in Roman capitals); Rev inscription: IN.BISHOPS.GATE.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / I.M.H. (four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials inas bottom, in field).
There is also another token issued by John Hearne at Bishopsgate Street in the museum collection, NN16510. The name of the business on this coin is different, so it may be that the proprietor had two different premises at different times.
