The Pump
Elias Holloway issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his premises, the Pump tavern in Bedlam (Old Bethlem neighbourhood, now Liverpool Street). The pump depicted on the token is a water pump.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 187; Obv inscription: ELIAS.HOLLOWAY.AT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A pump (in field); Rev inscription: IN.BEDLAM (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = E.B.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Old Bethlem neighbourhood, now Liverpool Street, is in Bishopsgate Ward, in the City of London.
