The Coffee House
John Clapton issued this trade token, worth a penny, for his business, a coffee house, in Bethlem (Old Bethlem neighbourhood, now Liverpool Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 182; Obv inscription: IOHN.CLAPTON.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A hand pouring coffee into a cup (in field); Rev inscription: COFFEE.HOVSE.IN.BETHELEM (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / PENNY / 1669 (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
