The Portcullis
Thomas Ryves issued this trade token, worth a half penny, at the Portcullis tavern in Bell Yard, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 177; Obv inscription: THOMAS.RYVES.IN.BELL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: YARD.WITHIN.TEMPLE.BARR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A portcullis (in field).
There is another token in the museum collection issued from the same premises, NN16480. See also token number 6551 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. The northern portion of Bell Yard lay in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London, whilst the southern portion lay in Westminster, Middlesex, now the City of Westminster.
