The Weavers' Arms
William Shatchwell issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in the Barbican.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 125; Obv inscription: WILL.SHATCHWELL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Weavers' Arms (in field); Rev: IN.BARBECAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.I.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The inclusion of the Weavers' Company arms on the token suggests that perhaps William Shatchwell was a weaver, or worked out of premises used by weavers. The arms of the Worshipful Company of Weavers are: Azure on a chevron argent between three leopards' heads each holding in the mouth a shuttle, or three roses gules (J.
