The Still
Richard Walton, a distiller (producer of alcoholic spirits), issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Aldgate within (now Aldgate Street), Aldgate Ward, City of London. The depiction on the token is of a still, used in the production of alcoholic spirits.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 82; Obv inscription: RICHARD.WALTON.AT.YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A still (in field); Rev inscription: STILL.WITHIN.ALGAT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.T.W. (triad of intials in Roman capitals, in field).
Richard Walton was a distiller in the parish of St Katherine Cree, in the ward of Aldgate within. He bound apprentices from 1669-78, see C. Webb ‘London Livery Company Apprenticeship Registers’ (London, 1996) Webb, xi, 8-9, 14,28, and his will was proved on 12th February, 1685 (PCC PROB 11/379).
