The Saracen's Head
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued by a chandler at a premises denoted by the sign of a Saracens' head in Aldgate within (now Aldgate Street), Aldgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 72; Obv inscription: AT.THE.SARESENS.HEAD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A Sarasen's head (in field); Rev inscription: WITHIN.ALGATE.CHANDLER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.S.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
See also, Bryant Lillywhite, London Coffee Houses, 1968 No. 1164. It is only after 1681 that the premises at the Saracen's head becomes a coffee house and coaching inn.
