The Sun
Charles Deare issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the Sun tavern at Addle Hill.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 9; Obv inscription: CHARLES.DEARE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The sun in splendour (in field); Rev inscription : AT.ADLIN.HILL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = C.E.D. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The sun was a symbol commonly used by distillers (someone who produces alcoholic spirits). .Addle Hill or Addlehill is in Castle Baynard Ward in the City of London.
