The Lion
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the Lion tavern in Abchurch Lane.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1; Obv inscription: AT.THE.LION.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = a lion passant (in field); Rev inscription: ABCHURCH.LANE.1649 (around field) Device = T.A.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The identity of the issuer T[homas] C[hubb?] is suggested by an overstruck specimen inscribed THO:CHVBBE COOKE IN SWEETINGS RENTS' see M. J. Dickinson and R.H. Thompson, 'Three seventeenth-century tokens overstruck on others', NCirc. 97 (1989), 325-6. See also Norweb Collection number 6428 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London.
