Stone, vessel, mortar
A large fragment of a mortar made from Purbeck (Dorset) marble; half remaining, with two square lugs. The exterior is tooled with slanting lines, level with the bottom of the lugs, which are rounded on the underside; below this the side curves inward to the base, the tooling marks becoming straight and closely spaced, as if done with a claw-tool; slight indentation just above the base, the underside of which is polished smooth. There is a similar band of finer tooling just below the rim, which has a flat smooth top. The interior is smooth, with some grinding marks visible on sides.
