Prehistoric — Early Bronze Age; c. 1700BC
Dagger
Bronze ogival dagger with engraved central rib and bevelled edges. Semicircular butt has three rivet holes with plug rivets still in position. Wessex type dagger, Camerton-Snowshill Series, type Snowshill (Gerloff 1975). Found in the Thames at Bermondsey (off Jamaica Road). Many daggers of this type are found in graves, others have been recovered from rivers. It is possible that this example was originally buried in a grave that was subsequently eroded by river action.
