Pendant, cavalry harness pendant

A copper-alloy 'trifid' pendant, apparently silvered (rather than tinned) and originally decorated with niello inlay. Little niello remains, but the incisions made to receive it can still be traced in most places as a break in the silvering. The pendant has the standard acorn terminals and central oak leaf, as well as a central lobe beneath the suspension neck. Unusually, there are additional lobes in the form of openwork decoration on either side of the suspension neck. The neck is pierced by a hole for suspension from a phalera. It is slightly hollow on the rear face, with four notches on the neck, evidently for matching the pendant to its phalera.

The object shares many features in common with the Doorwerth (Netherlands) and Xanten (Germany) pendants, but the additional volutes on either side of the suspension neck are more difficult to parallel.
