Copper, copper alloy, stud, phallic stud
Copper-alloy phallic 'caterpillar' stud with ribbed decoration of the front face and two flat-headed shanks surviving to the rear.
Caterpillar studs of this kind appear to belong to early to mid 2nd century types of equipment, examples from Castleford being Hadrianic in date. Examination of pieces from Corbridge has shown that some at least had niello inlaid between the ribs.
