Port & River — 1880-1882
Sextant
This brass sextant was presented as a prize to trainee marine officer Horace Frederick Warne in 1882 by the First Nautical and Mathematical Division of the Thames Nautical College, HMS Worcester. The sextant, manufactured in London by Henry Hughes and son has a silver scale and vernier, a magnifier, two telescopes and seven coloured filters. An engraved presentation plate is attached to the top of the wooden box lid. A prize giving ceremony, similar to that at which Horace received his sextant is illustrated within the 22 December 1863 edition of the Illustrated London news and shows the presentation of such a prize to a young officer onboard the same Marine Officer's training ship the 'Worcester'.
The sextant was donated to the Museum by Karl Berriman who sent it direct from his home in Patterson, USA. The case still retains two USA dealers stickers from Seattle, one dated 1959.
