Decorated samian ware bowl, form Dragendorff 37, stamp: IOENALISF on underside of base, the mark of the potter Ioenalis of Les Martre-de-Veyre, Central Gaul. Decorated with basal wreath of a nine petalled rosette with a central ring, with a frieze of human figures within arches with saltire-style cross. Samian ware is high-quality Roman tableware made in Gaul (modern-day France) and exported throughout the empire. See Stanfield & Simpson, pl 35, 413.
