Beaker
Decorated samian ware beaker, form Dechelette 72, made at Lezoux, Central Gaul. Decorated with three bands of design, including foliate pattern, and cupids, rabbit figures and spirals. The far more common bowl forms were decorated by impressing stamps into the sides of an open mould into which the clay was then pressed. But this globular beaker was decorated by applying the clay motifs onto the finished shape. Samian ware is high-quality Roman tableware made in Gaul (modern-day France) and exported throughout the empire.
