Bottle, prismatic square bottle
A square glass bottle. Colour: natural blue. Good quality glass, quite thin for type, with moderately frequent bubbles, especially on shoulder; round, medium-sized bubbles in body, elongated in neck. Unweathered. Parts present: complete (rim, neck, body, handle, base). Technical features: mould-blown. Rim plain and regular, in-folded with chamfered profile. Handle made from two thick trails, joining, laid on shoulder, bent through right-angle and touched on neck. Base design: three concentric rings; right-angular rib in each corner. Isings form 50.
Part of cremation group (A14398-A14401) from the northern cemetery at Bishopsgate, London EC2.
Glass bottles like this, in a variety of sizes, were often placed in burials as they may have contained either perfumed oil suitable for anointing the corpse, or a drink to accompany the deceased on their journey to the underworld. Food and drink from the funeral feast is also sometimes found in burials.
