Roman — Roman; 2nd to 3rd centuries
Cup
This shiny, bright orange, samian ware cup, was made in France in the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE and imported to Britain. This bowl was found in Southwark, and we know that it was made by a man called Materus, because he stamped his name in Latin, 'MATERNI', on the base - many hundreds of pieces of his pottery have been found across the empire. Samian ware was popular in Roman London, reflecting the busy, cosmopolitian nature of this trading settlement - archaeologists have found this type of pottery in shops, homes, and warehouses by the river.
