Hearth and Home
Brooke's print shows a house on Grove Road, Bow, during demolition. The house's facade is missing and the internal rooms and fixtures are exposed to the outside. Brooke photographed the terrace houses which remained on Grove Road in 1993, eventually producing a series of works about the houses of which 'Hearth and Home' is one. She recalled that 'the middle house was still occupied, under protest, at the time and it was later turned into the sculpture 'House' by Rachel Whiteread. I planned to make a print of these houses before I knew what was going on: I've had a fascination with bricked up doors and windows for some time...'
