Tankard
A tulip-style tankard of quart capacity with a thickened everted rim, decorative fillets around the lower body and a ridged pedestal foot. The ‘broken’ or ‘C-scroll’ handle has been attached to the body with struts. There is a crowned ‘GR’ verification mark underneath the base and another verification mark of a prancing horse with the number 4 has been struck below the rim to the left of the handle. The body is inscribed 'Three Crowns’. The faint circular touch struck inside the base of clasped hands encircled by the legend [IOHN WARNE] and ‘BLk. FRs. Rd’ is the mark of John Warne I, London, OP4968, who was active from 1793-1822. Warne worked from 25 Great Surrey Street, Blackfriars until1809 and thereafter from 18, Phoenix Row, Blackfriars.
