Coin, denarius
A silver denarius coin of Emperor Augustus, ruler of the Roman Empire, 31 BC-AD 14. The front of the coin depicts Virtus, the personification of courage and bravery. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, 18 BC. Senatorial coinage of L. Aquillius Florus.
Obv: Draped and helmeted bust of Virtus, facing right. Obv inscription: L AQV[ILLIVS] FLORVS III VIR. Rev: The emperor, advancing left on a biga of elephants, holding a laurel branch in his right hand and a sceptre in the left. Rev inscription: [AVGVSTVS] in field, CAESAR in exergue. Part of a hoard from the site of Temple House, Queen Victoria Street, 1958.
