Table, table top
Fragment of circular shale table top; one side smooth and flat, the other with a rebate 83 mm from the outer edge; double concentric lines 10 mm from edge on the rebated side, with two parallel lines on the bevelled edge. Although decorated, it appears that the rebated side is the underside; the thickened edge would have had mortises to take the tenons of the legs.
This arrangement can be seen on examples from Silchester (Lawson 1976, nos 94-5) , where again the underside is more highly decorated than the upper surface, see Croom 2007, 72.
