Saxon & Medieval — Late 15th - early 16th century
Scrap
Offcut of brass strip, which has been superficially corroded and has redder and yellower areas. There are two pairs of counter-sunk holes along the centre. It is possible that one end of the strip has been broken off. This is manufacturing waste left over from making belt mounts. It is from a batch of unfinished buckles and matching belt-ends that was dumped in a well near Cheapside. The mass-produced, cheap fittings were made from folded and stamped brass sheet, which was probably imported from Nuremberg in Germany.
