A copper alloy brooch in the form of a Roman sandal. This type of brooch was popular in the northern provinces in the 2nd century AD and is sometimes found in 3rd century contexts. The enamelled surface is decorated with circles, now appearing white and yellow, representing iron hobnails. The suspension loop for the chain is found on the 'heel', with a hinged pin on the reverse.
Brooches were used like safety pins, buttons and zips are used today. They were functional and held garments together. They were also made to be decorative and often had coloured enamels along the bow. Novelty brooches were also popular.
