Decorative arts — 19th or 20th century
Badge, pendant badge
One of two bronze devotional pendant badges. It was made on the Continent and probably acquired from a shrine. It shows a three-quarter length figure in shallow relief, wearing a halo and holding a crucifix. Around the figure is inscribed ‘San Luis Gonzaga.’
Aloysius Gonzaga, called in Spanish Luis de Gonzaga, was an Italian aristocrat who joined the Jesuits. He died while caring for the victims of an epidemic and was canonized in 1726.
