Social History — 1951
Model, South Bank model
This model shows the South Bank Exhibition that was constructed for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The site covered 27 acres of what was previously bomb-damaged industrial buildings, including the Lion Brewery, and run-down housing. A new urban townscape was created with futuristic pavilions and pubic artworks of startling modernity. The only old building left was the Shot Tower, built in 1826 for the manufacture of lead shot. This familiar structure was adapted for the Festival with a lighthouse and a radar telescope at its summit. Most of this was cleared away when the Festival closed, but the Royal Festival Hall remains.
