Chyrsanthemum flower design
Chinese manufacturers made porcelain for export to the European market in Jingdezhen. Porcelain products were shipped to London via Canton (Guangzhou) by the East India Company along with tea and other commodities.
This dish was made during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722). It is decorated with a pattern of stylised flowers. Patterns like this had a major influence on English manufacturers who were keen to compete with Chinese imports. They imitated the distinctive Chinese designs featuring exotic flora and fauna, buildings, figures in Chinese-style dress and mythical creatures like dragons.
