Charles II escutcheon
Escutcheon of King Charles II with 'CR' inscribed on it. Many people welcomed the Restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660, but enthusiasm for the monarch was not universal. In 1667 one Londoner wrote ‘it is strange…how everybody doth nowadays reflect upon Oliver and commend him…while [Charles] is a prince, come in with all the love and prayers and good liking of his people...hath lost all so soon, that it is a miracle what way a man could devise to lose so much in so little time’.
