Oliver Cromwell trial piece
Pewter trial piece of the Broad of Oliver Cromwell, Tower Mint, dated 1656, engraved by T. Simon. Obverse: Bust of Cromwell crowned with laureate wreath, facing left, with legend 'OLIVA. RD. G. RP. ANG. SCO. ET. HIB & PRO'. Reverse: Coat of arms, with legend 'PAX. QVRÆRITVR. BELLO.1656'. Trial pieces, were coins struck for testing a die often in a different metal and on a different size planchet from that used for the actual coin.
