Charles I and Henrietta Maria badge
Medal of King Charles I and his wife Henrietta Maria. Obverse: bust of Charles I, facing right, crowned, falling plain collar with lace fringe, decorated armour, ribbon and sash. Legend: ‘CAROLUS: DG: REX’. The edge of the medal is in the form of a garter with a buckle towards the base. On the garter is the legend ‘HONI SOIT QVIS MAL Y PENSE’. Reverse: bust of Henrietta Maria, facing left, hair twisted and corded behind, in pearl necklace, and ear-ring, lace collar, stiff and erect, and bodice ornamented with jewels. Legend: ‘HENRETA MARIA D G REG’. Badges and medals ‘containing our Royal image, and that of our dearest son, Prince Charles, to be delivered to wear on the breast’ were given to the king’s supporters. It was an offence to wear a medal which had not been earned or to sell one which had.
