The measure is dated to the 16th century and was found in Southwark and so in the bull’s head marks may refer either to the Black Bull Inn in Southwark, 1571-1634 or, perhaps to ‘the Bolles Hede by the chaingate’ within the precincts of the former priory of St. Mary Overy (later St. Saviour’s Church) in 1542.
