Post-Medieval — Late 17th century; 1668
Measure, baluster measure
The lid, decorated with concentric turning, has been struck with six ownership marks in beaded circles: five depicting a rose flanked by the initials ‘T’ and ‘E’ with the letter ‘G’ above, and one modified to read ‘G’, ‘T’ and ?’T’. The ‘G’ over ‘T’ and ‘E’ mark has also been struck just inside the rim and the initials are repeated in triad form at the top of the handle (see 48.38/12). The body is marked with scratched initials ‘I’ (J) and an ‘LP’ or ‘LD’. The lid is smooth on the underside. There is a piece missing on the rim and neck and the vessel has been subjected to intense heat. The base has been strengthened and turned on the lathe. The maker’s touch dated 1668 on the rim to the right of the handle, is probably that of Joseph Stanley, London, free in 1668 (not recorded by Cotterell; see Ricketts, 2001, 203).
