Post-Medieval — 16th century
'French' hood headdress frame
Copper alloy wire curved headdress frame, which has been twisted once on each side. The ends of the frame are capped with knobs of solder, probably to stop the sharp wire from digging into the wearer's head. Several types of headdress can be identified from surviving wire frames. Diamond shapes were fashionable in the late 1400s and early 1500s. The curved frame (French hood) was common from the 1520s.
