Whistle
Bone whistle formed from longitudinal slice through bovine, horse or red deer long bone. The bone has been cut and lathe turned into a whistle. The rounded mouthpiece is concave on one side to which the lower lip of the player is pressed, and houses the blowhole. The breath of the player isdirected into the pipe and out through the front of the mouthpiece by the fipple, also of bone. The pipe extends only part way down the bone, the remainder is solid and tapers towards the broken end which possibly had a screw thread section. There is a round hole through the shaft just below the pipe chamber, probably for suspension.
