Jug, bartmann jug
This is a Bartmann jug, which takes its name from the German for 'bearded man'. In the middle of the medallion are the initials 'PVA' for Pieter van den Ancker, and an anchor, representing this man's name. Pieter van den Ancker came from Dordrecht to London in 1654 to trade in stoneware bottles and wines from the Rhineland and France. Drinking vessels were imported to London from Cologne and Frechen in Germany in huge quantities to supply the luxury market.
