Decorative arts — 1726-1750
Plate
This fragment of a Dutch tin-glazed earthenware plate was excavated from a cesspit on the site of Tom's Coffee House in Wood Street, just off Cheapside. It shows the type of plates on which food was served in a City of London coffee house operating in the 1730s. Here, Dutch potters are copying the patterns found on 17th and 18th century Chinese ceramics. Such wares were imported from Holland competing with London delftware potteries that made similar types of eating and drinking utensils.
