Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1891-1910
Linda
Fashion plate depicting a woman wearing an olive green wasp-waisted dress with a high neck. The fabric of the dress is patterned with vertical stripes, and the centre back section of the skirt is patterned with contrasting horizontal stripes. There is a tie at the waist with a bow at the back and the hem is trimmed with vertical ruffles. To the right is an image of the back of the dress.
Edwardian women wore straight-fronted corsets which pushed their upper body forward and their hips back, giving an S-shaped outline.
Beneath the image is stamped ‘Messrs. Lewis and Allenby Limited/ Regent St./ London.’ Written in the top left corner is ‘Linda’, and in pencil on the back is ‘6d’.
Lewis & Allenby was a famous London silk mercers which supplied silks to Queen Victoria and other members of the royal family. They established themselves on the west side of Regent Street in the 1820s and extended to Conduit Street in the 1830s. The firm was absorbed by Dickens & Jones in the early 20th century.
