A Street Tea in the East End: To Celebrate the Peace Treaty of 1919
George Charlton's ink drawing records an East End celebration of the end of the First World War. Crowds throng a street of terraced houses where an open-air tea party is under way. Bunting and Union Jacks are strung across the street from windows and rooftops. Tables and settles filled with children line the street. A photographer records the scene.
A painter of landscapes and an illustrator, London-born Charlton studied at the Slade School from 1914, joining the staff there in 1919. He later taught at Willesden School of Art and was an art examiner for the University of London school examinations.
