Frozen out bargemen
Sketch of a demonstration: a group of bargemen walking along the street pull a cart carrying a small rowing boat. In the boat a man sits holding a placard bearing the words "Pray assist the poor frozen out Bargemen". Thames froze Jan 16th for about 6 weeks. 10,000 dock workers were out of work & there were bread riots. See 'ILN' & 'Famous Frosts & Frost Fairs' William Andrews 1887. Landells (1833-77) was war correspondent for the ILN covering the Crimean, Prusso-Danish and Franco-Prussian wars.
