Temple Bar Illuminated for the Marriage of the Prince of Wales, 11 March 1863
Temple Bar is shown at night, richly decorated by red and gold hangings, with people and vehicles thronging the Strand to celebrate the royal marriage.
Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on 10 March 1863. The wedding was a lavish royal and public occasion and the illuminations of Temple Bar took a fortnight of preparation. The decorations included a medallion of the Prince and Princess in the centre, surmounted by a statue of Hymen, the personification of marriage. Angels holding orange blossoms, surmounted by tripods, were placed over the footways.
The painting is very similar to an engraving in the Illustrated London News which appeared on March 28 1863 p. 352.
