Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1895
The Frozen Thames at Greenwich
This painting was produced on the last occasion that the River Thames froze over, in February 1895. A tug and barges are shown icebound on the river while several buildings are silhouetted against the sky in the distance. While the background is quite indistinct, the foreground has been rendered in more detail: seagulls, driven inland by hunger, can be seen flying among the surf and standing on the shoreline.
Although the 'Illustrated London News' devoted considerable picture and caption space to this event, this seems to be the only painted record of it. The artist has not been identified but the initials 'A. H' on the painting could stand for A. Hewitt, although nothing is known about this artist.
