Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1883
The Back Yard of the Queen's Head Inn, No. 105 Borough High Street, Southwark
Originally called the Cross or Crowned Keys, the Queen's Head Inn at 105 Borough High Street in Southwark was probably renamed as such in the sixteenth century in honour of Queen Elizabeth I. The entrance to the tap room can be seen next to the seated figure. A stooping gentleman with an umbrella and a dog is walking towards the doorway while a figure leaning out of an upstairs window looks on.
The inn, which closed in May 1895, was visited by Philip Norman who described a long room on the first floor with an early seventeenth-century carved oak mantelpiece.
Two other paintings of the inn by Norman exist, both in the V&A collection: both are watercolours and are signed and dated 1883 and 1884.
