Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1884
Chesterfield House, Blackheath
Bree's painting is a late example of the genre of the painted house portrait. It shows the front of Chesterfield House (later Ranger's House) in Chesterfield Walk, Blackheath. While the central block dates from the early 18th century, modifications were made from mid 18th century onwards. The doorway and covered entrance seen here are probably Victorian. They were removed in 1903. The cupola surmounted by a weather vane can be seen between the trees on the left.
During the 18th century, Blackheath became a popular spot for the well-heeled to set up a country retreat close to London.
