Portrait of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales
The eldest son of James I, Henry Frederick Prince of Wales ( 1594-1612), came to England from Scotland in 1603 when his father inheited the throne. It is likely that this painting was executed shortly afterwards. It has been attributed to Robert Peake the Elder (1551-1619) the official court portrait painter to Prince Henry who lived in the Holborn parish of St Sepulchre-without Newgate. Henry died suddently of typhoid fever aged 18 and was succeeded by his younger brother later Charles I. He ha stherefore occupied an intriguing place in the line of British 'might hve been monarchs'
In this portrait, the young prince is shown at half-length, facing slightly to the left, with one hand on his hip. He is wearing a silver slashed doublet, an elaborate lace collar and the insignia of the Order of the Garter around his neck, invested on him on 2 July 1603.
